Dogtooth (2009), Greece
A bizarre almost sci-fi like setup whereby a family lives almost entirely secluded from the outside world in a Big Brother style villa with a garden and a pool surrounded by high walls is the focus of this mysterious and enigmatic Cannes awarded first film from Giorgos Lanthimos. Deranged educational techniques and their weird consequences kept me unnaturally glued to the screen. Whether this film is a straight up critique on home schooling or a more sophisticated dig at the Americanization of the Greek economy is anyone’s guess but in any event, this is well worth a viewing.
